Community-Driven Recovery: CAAAV’s Call for Help for Residents Left in the DarkNEWS, News Right Tuesday, October 30th, 2012
CAAAV is organizing much needed relief efforts in Chinatown beginning Wednesday. They will be collecting donations of food, water, and flashlights and batteries in their offices starting at 10am.
In their assessment of the damage that Hurricane Sandy wrought, they found that little information is getting in and out of Chinatown. In the aftermath of power outages, most residents lost cell, landline, and internet service. Many have yet to learn when electricity and public transit will come back. Some tenants even had their water shut off.
C AAAV offices will be open for tenants to get information, but they are also asking for access to a photocopier and generator. The photocopier will be used to make flyers with information while the generator will allow residents to charge their phones.
In addition to acception donations, CAAAV is asking for volunteers to hand out flyers, check in on people in buildings, and hand out food and water if needed. Volunteers will also generally be needed to lend an ear to tenants who have been left in the dark.
CAAAV offices are located on 46 Hester St and will be open starting at 10am on Wednesday
Update: CAAAV was able to secure a power generator.Tweet
